I enjoy gathering and using
natural materials in my work. Using the elements of nature, like
our ancestors did, brings a sense of peace and a connectedness
with basketmakers across the continents and across centuries,
as basketry is the oldest craft known to man and was practiced
in cultures around the world. Currently, I am continuing to explore
the techniques of traditional and contemporary basketry.
I strive to create a harmonious
whole in my pieces which incorporate both basketry, gourd and
ceramic mediums. I am constantly working to improve my craftsmanship
in the slab-rolled and wheel-thrown ceramic pieces I create. I
have also begun to explore knotting as a sculptural form and I
hope to expand my knowledge of this technique.
I am fascinated by the opposition
I feel when creating a basket, gourd or piece of ceramics: the
creative side which loves flowing lines, textures, experimentation
and color, versus the controlled, organized side, which loves
the symmetry and careful construction.
Deuteronomy 26:4 ..."And the
priest shall take the basket out of thine hand and set it before
the altar of the Lord thy God."
