Misti Washington was a nationally known,
highly respected As an author of two books, numerous articles in various publications and instructional pamphlets, she generated the enthusiasm, fostered the development, and inspired countless basketmakers-- including the charter members of MWGBG--until her death in 1997. Our guild is named to honor her life and her memory. Don Weeke, in a tribute presentation to Misti at the first Gourd and Basketry Weekend, said, "She taught all of us and opened a whole new world ...She was the one who originated, researched and documented the plants and how to use them...She is a master craftsman in terms of all the techniques and she is open to exploring further and further...She opens you up to the possibility that basketry can become art...She has been my teacher, my mentor, my inspiration and my friend."
