Rummage Sale
The MWGBG Rummage Sale will be held Saturday, July 10 FROM 8:00 a.m. to
2:00 p.m. at All Saints Episcopal Church, 651 Eucalyptus Avenue, Vista
(Corner of Escondido Ave. and Eucalyptus). The church is across from the
Farmer's Market so it should be a good location for us.
You can bring your donations to the June MEETING. Also, things can be
dropped of at PATTY SAVINSKI'S house in Ocean Beach or Margo Raines's
house in Santee. If anyone else can volunteer as a drop off center, please
contact PATTY. She also has a truck if you have something that you can't
transport yourself. Anyone else who would be able to pick up items, please
let PATTY know.
PLEASE price your items before you bring them in. We will set up AT 6
A.M. on Saturday morning and PRE- PRICING will save lots of valuable time
if we don't have to do it at the last minute. NO clothes or shoes and
PLEASE all items MUST be of good quality.
We will also need volunteers for set up and to work the sale through
the day. We need tables, tents, canopies. Hopefully you will be planning
to attend to check out all the great values and we can also put you to
work. The more volunteers we have for this, the faster we can get
everything organized - and remember if you are there to set up you get
first crack at all the good stuff. PATTY will be taking names for these
various tasks at the next two meetingS but if your aren't going to be able
to attend, please send her an e-mail (psavinski@yahoo.com) or give me a
call (619-222- 4370) and let her know what you will be able to add, be it
items or your valuable time. The proceeds of the sale will go for the
rental on the storage unit, slide projector costs, scholarships, and
general fund. Patty Savinski

Gourd Beat, by Peggy Blessing |

| Welburn Festival Mark your calendars for the
8th Annual International Gourd Art Festival
[http://www.gourdfestival.com/] on June 26 - 27, 2004 at Welburn
Gourd Farm. Classes will take place on June 24 and 25. We encourage
all of our gourd artist members to submit artwork in the annual
California Gourd Society competition during the Festival. It's a
great opportunity to expose your art to thousands of people. Pieces
are due to be delivered to Welburn Gourd Farm by Thursday, June 24,
5:00pm, as the show will be set up for judging on Friday. Items
submitted by mail must be postmarked by June 15. Rules and
information on the adult and children's categories are on the CGS
website [http://calgourd.com/comp_rules.htm] and in the Spring 2004
issue of the Golden Gourd.
Call for Volunteers As the San Diego Patch, we will provide the
core volunteers needed to work at the CGS information/sales booth.
We will also provide some security in the exhibit tent and help out
with some of the festival activities and demonstrations. There will
be other CGS volunteers working beside us, and it's a great way to
interact with fellow gourders from all over the State.
One of the benefits to us for doing this is our ability to
collect names and mailing addresses for the 2005 Weekend in the
Gardens class catalog. Also, volunteers will be allowed to sell
gourd-related items in the CGS booth. (Remember, you are required to
have a valid California resale license/number to sell items.) There
is no commission fee required, but members are encouraged to make a
small donation to the CGS.
In addition to the areas mentioned above, we are also looking for
folks to help set up the exhibit on Friday and pack up Sunday after
the festival. Please contact Peggy Blessing (giza@sprynet.com;
858-292-9219) and let her know the day(s) you will be at the
Festival and your preferred 2-hour time slot (will try to
accommodate) and if you will have items for sale. She must have your
names by June 19 in order to guarantee free admission on the day you
volunteer. If anyone is interested in being a judge or recorder
(excellent training for judging) for the competition, please Carol
Rookstool (crookstool@fidm.edu) for details. Traveling Gourd Winner
Well, I guess you figured out that you didn't win the California
Gourd Society Traveling Gourd. . . The good news is that it was won
by someone in the CGS family, Kemper Stone, the leader of the
Vallejo/Carquinez regional patch. Minutes before the drawing on
Saturday night (April 17), all those who contributed artwork to the
Big Gourd went up on stage. At that time, Kemper was heard to say
that this gourd shouldn't go to any one individual, but that it
should remain a part of the CGS and be put on display for all to
see. It was a touching moment when the name Donna Stone was called,
and Kemper (who was up on stage with us) said "that's my Mom!" After
a few teary moments, he said that his Mom passed away only two
months before. As it turned out, he purchased a number of raffle
tickets and put the names of family members on them! A CD ROM
documenting the making of the traveling gourd is available for
purchase ($12 + shipping). If you are interested in purchasing one,
contact Judy and Larry Cunningham (larr2000@earthlink.net). Asilomar
Conference Well this year's CGS conference (April 16-18) at Asilomar
Conference Grounds didn't disappoint. I've been to all four now, and
each one just gets better than the last. We had great weather and
were able to enjoy sunny ocean walks. An event of this nature always
leads to great camaraderie, but the beautiful surroundings, great
family-style meals only heighten this effect. The classes on
Saturday were excellent. Beginning at dinner on Saturday evening, a
fun gourd mask "parade" took place. Some of these included full body
costumes to match! It was awesome, and I assume photos will be on
the CGS website [calgourd.com] at some point. The live auction and
raffle item drawing was incredibly organized. (I got some great
stuff!!) Also, it was great all being together in the great hall on
Sunday morning where mini lectures about new products and tips and
tools were given. All in all, it was a gourdeous weekend! The next
conference will take place in 2006. We'll announce the dates as soon
as they become available. I highly recommend all gourd artists
experience this CGS member event.

There was indeed magic in the air
Saturday evening at the May 1st opening of "Baskets, Gourds &
Imagination" at The Next Door Gallery in Golden Hill. The exhibition
features the work of many of the finest contemporary fiber artists
in Southern California. It almost goes without saying that a
substantial majority of them are Guild Members - thirteen out of
seventeen, in fact. The approximately 50 pieces exhibited include
almost every imaginable type of basketry and gourd art technique:
coiling, twining, plain weaving, twill, construction, random-weave,
sewing (by both machine and hand), gourd carving, dyeing, bead work,
and painting, all done with consummate skill and imagination. The
show is the vision of Susan Roberts, Cathey Byrd and Maureen
Ceccarelli, the owner of The Next Door Gallery. They brought the
artists together to showcase what is new and exciting in the world
of basketry and gourd art. Polly Jacobs Giacchina and Johanna Hansen
hung the show beautifully, incorporating over four dozen works, some
quite large, into a very small space, yet achieving a balanced,
spacious feeling. Member participants are: Jeanne Ames, Cathey Byrd,
Michal Costello, Lynne Everett, Polly Jacobs Giacchina, Nancy
Johnson, Kathi Klopfenstein, Paul Klopfenstein, Carol E. Lang, Mary
Pryor, Susan Roberts, Don Weeke, Peggy Weidemann. Additional
participants are Charlotte Bird, Keely Berry-LeBlanc, Robin Pryzbyz,
and Cat Varvis. A small jewel, The Next Door Gallery is affiliated,
and shares space, with Studio Maureen at 2963 Beech Street, San
Diego, three minutes from the heart of downtown San Diego. Hours are
Wednesday through Sunday, noon to 5:00 p.m.
Of special note, three of the participating artists, Peggy
Weidemann, Don Weeke and Cathey Byrd, are featured in Fiberarts
Design Book 7.
From Michal Costello: The Quad Foundation is having a fund raiser
on July 30. Part of the fund raiser is an auction. If any of you
would like to donate a piece to the auction, please contact Michal
Costello at 858-673-8575 or at mickyy51@san.rr.com. The proceeds of
the auction will go towards the goal of bringing exercise equipment
to quadriplegic individuals in the San Diego area. The latest we
would like to receive any donated items is July 15. We want to be
certain that any donated items are listed in the fund raiser
bulletin. Pete, the son of the founder of the Quad Foundation, was a
passenger in a car involved in an accident in July 2004. The
founder's goal is to assist other quadriplegic individuals in the
San Diego. You can read more about the Quad Foundation at
www.quadfoundation.org. There you will find a link to Pete's
website.
Carol Lang has three pieces that have been accepted for the fine
arts exhibit at the San Diego County Fair. They are: Drifting,
Interior Elements and Emerald Forest, all coiled pieces. She also
has three pieces in Low Altitude / High Attitude, California Fibers
at Convergence at the Gallery of Contemporary Art at the University
of Colorado at Colarado Springs, CO. The show dates are June 4 to
July 30.
