A special guest, basket maker Cael Chappell, will present an informative and interesting basketry lecture at Noon on Sunday, May 2, 2021. The lecture is open to the general public (see below for registration instructions). This presentation follows a 45-minute Guild member meeting beginning at 11:00am .
Cael Chappell, basket maker and founder of Baskets of Africa, will present stories, pictures, videos and information about African baskets. There is a wide variety of basketry done in Africa which you'll see in this overview. Cael will tell the story of how he started weaving his own baskets and show a few of his pieces as well. During Cael’s years of travel across Africa to meet and work with basket weavers, he discovered that basketry is as diverse as it is universal. Cael is inspired by global weaving traditions to create his own unique baskets and conveys his interpretation of places, people, things, and ideas through basketry. You can visit Cael’s website to find out more about him and see his beautiful work. In 2002, Cael founded a fair trade project designed to support weavers and their families in rural Africa. He still works at Baskets of Africa every day, as it’s his passion to work with weavers and baskets from across Africa.
