Misti Washington Gourd & Basket Guild is honored to have been chosen as one of the first eight art groups to display their members’ artwork in the San Diego Airport’s New Terminal 1 exhibit space. The first phase of the exhibit installation, “The Studio Overview Space” opened September 24, 2025 (viewable past TSA check in). This phase of the exhibit features Susan Roberts’ artwork, along with natural materials used by our Guild’s artists.

MWGBG display installed in “The Studio Overview Space,” the first phase of the Terminal 1 exhibit. The artist’s work chosen for display is by Susan Roberts, a long-time member who contributed much to the Guild and who sadly passed away a few years ago. Also shown are examples of natural materials used in members’ artwork. This display will remain in place to entice visitors to enter the exhibit area showing more of our Guild members’ artwork when the final installation phase is completed. — Photo by Daniel Dennert
From an article in the San Diego Union Tribune:
“The arts team at the airport has carved an artistic space meant to celebrate all things local. The Studio, as it’s called, ‘is the new space in the new Terminal 1 that is reserved for our temporary exhibition program,’ says Daniel Dennert, the curator and arts program manager at the San Diego International Airport. ‘It was designed thoughtfully to be a multipurpose space,’ he says. ‘So we can also utilize performing arts in here as well as have workshops with local artists. One of my favorite things about the temporary exhibition program is it’s the primary way that we bring in local artists … and make sure that we’re representing them and their voices.’
The inaugural exhibit, titled ‘Snapshot San Diego,’ is meant to be a visual journey showcasing and celebrating the region’s ‘vibrant cultures, histories and artistic expressions.’ Highlighted in the exhibit are eight local San Diego institutions, including the Japanese Friendship Garden & Museum, Comic-Con Museum, Visions Museum of Textile Art, Ilan-Lael Foundation and the Misti Washington Gourd & Basket Guild. The exhibit will run for two years, with a new group lined up for the second year.”
The Guild hopes you will all enjoy and, when announced, help to spread the word about the upcoming final phase of this amazing exhibit!
