Guild Member Exhibit in Encinitas
“Anything that Will Bend”
November 1, 2022 through January 3, 2023
Encinitas Civic Center
505 S. Vulcan Avenue, Encinitas, CA
Hours: Monday-Friday from 7:30am-5:30pm - Closed on alternating Fridays [760-633-2600]
Guild members will be showing their basket and gourd art. The “Anything that Will Bend” theme describes the vast variety of materials that Misti Washington Gourd and Basket Guild members use to create their artwork. They are willing to try just about every type of natural material and many man-made materials as well.
Seven members of the Misti Washington Gourd and Basket Guild — Debra Zimmerman, Grace Swanson, Carol Lang, Peggy Blessing, Sue Kamin, Jennifer Tang-Limon, and Vicki Patnode have their artwork in the Civic Center from November 1, 2022 - January 3, 2023. Some of the 32 artworks displayed are offered for sale and some are not.
One of the baskets made by Misti Washington, who the guild was named for, will also be on display but will not be for sale. Misti was a highly respected, nationally known, basket maker, artist, craftswoman, teacher and author who lived and worked in Solana Beach. Misti generated enthusiasm and inspiration, and fostered the development of countless basket makers until her death in 1997.
An artists’ reception will take place during the Encinitas Art Night event on Saturday, November 19, 2022, from 5:30 to 8:30. Artists will be doing demonstrations and have additional artwork for sale.
The mission of the Guild is to preserve, promote and perpetuate the appreciation of gourd and basket art by providing a supportive, sharing and educational environment. Members of MWGBG represent all levels of interest in basket and gourd making — beginners, professionals, hobbyists and collectors. The members all share a common fascination for handmade vessels and sculptural objects — whether ornamental or utilitarian — and for the natural and manufactured fibers used in their construction.
